And then we have the critics, who worry about potential long-term health effects, such as thyroid problems, bone issues, and neurological disorders. The thyroid gland is essential for regulating metabolism, mental health, body weight, and body temperature, among other vital processes. An imbalanced thyroid can cause a range of symptoms, including fatigue, weight gain, constipation, dry skin, hair loss, menstrual irregularities, and a slowed heart rate.

Studies show that fluoride can affect thyroid hormones and may cause an under-active thyroid. Getting enough iodine might help, but it doesn’t completely remove the risk.

Cognitive Impairment

Some studies suggest a link between fluoride exposure and cognitive impairment. For instance, a 2019 Canadian study found that higher fluoride exposure during pregnancy was associated with lower IQ scores in children. Although the evidence is mixed, these findings call for further research.

Fluoride has been linked to various health issues, such as bone cancer, brain damage, and problems with the endocrine system. It can also mix with other substances in water, like aluminum and lead, possibly creating harmful compounds or causing more lead to seep into the water supply.

Fluoride is found naturally in small amounts in various foods and beverages. People obtain most of their fluoride from fluoridated water and toothpaste. Some fruits, potatoes, brewed black tea and coffee naturally contain fluoride, as the plants absorb the mineral from the soil. Shellfish may also contain fluoride that collects in their shells and muscles.

The primary fluoride compounds added to public water supplies—sodium fluoride, hydrofluosilicic acid, and sodium silicofluoride—are byproducts of the aluminum and phosphate fertilizer industries.

In the early 20th century, major aluminum producers like Alcoa funded research to study the dental effects of fluoride, proving adding fluoride to public water supply is essential for the health of the people. Conflict of interest?

This combination of natural sources and industrial additives makes fluoride a unique and controversial topic. It leads to ongoing discussions among scientists, health professionals, and the public.

The Optimal Levels of Fluoride

On average, the recommended levels of fluoride in U.S. tap water are between 0.7 and 1.2 milligrams per liter, with the maximum allowed level set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at 4.0 milligrams per liter. However, some municipalities have reported fluoride levels as high as 10 milligrams per liter, far exceeding the recommended limits.

Fluoride exposure is cumulative, meaning that only half of what is consumed is excreted. The cumulative nature of fluoride intake makes it difficult to control individual consumption, raising concerns about potential toxicity, particularly in communities with high fluoride levels in their water supply.
